What is tretinoin?
Tretinoin is a retinoid used to treat acne, melasma, scars and skin ageing. It is a vitamin A derivative and is known under the brand names Retin-A, Avita and Renova.
>What does tretinoin do?
Tretinoin increases the rate at which skin cells renew themselves. It does this by causing a slight irritation of the skin, which causes the cells to divide and die off more quickly. In addition, tretinoin reduces the breakdown of collagen and increases the production of type I and II collagen.
Is retinol the same as tretinoin?
Technically, retinol and tretinoin do the same thing. But retinol is much weaker than tretinoin because it must first be converted into retinoic acid in order to be used by the skin. Tretinoin IS retinoic acid, so it can be used by the skin as soon as it is applied. As such, tretinoin is much more potent than retinol. Even the weakest tretinoin is more powerful than the strongest retinol product. With tretinoin, results can be seen in six to eight weeks, whereas retinol must be used for at least six months to see results.
How do I use tretinoin?
You use tretinoin every day or every two days in the evening before going to bed. When treating acne, apply a thin layer to the skin where lesions are present. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth and mucous membranes.
